ConexED accessibility features enable participants with disabilities such as visual and hearing impairment to schedule, attend, and participate in both Cranium Cafe and Classroom video meetings. These enhancements to the service are based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and the 21st Century Communications & Video Accessibility Act requirements and are made in order to expand access to student support services.

We’ve made the ConexED as accessible and easy to use as possible by adding numerous useful features including making the both meeting spaces, Cranium Cafe and Classrooms, usable with keyboard shortcuts, the ability to tab through the menu with visual indicators, and the ability to turn closed captioning on and off.

When entering a meeting, after testing your webcam and mic through the pre-meeting check, you will be asked to activate your webcam and mic, microphone, or none. Simply tabbing to the selection you want to make and hitting enter will activate the option you’ve chosen. You can also change this at any time by tabbing to the webcam, mic, or stop sharing button near your video feed button here.

You can also toggle any of the above using the keyboard shortcut ctrl + shift + 1 for webcam, ctrl + shift + 2 for microphone, and ctrl + shift + 3 for screen sharing.

Which leads to the usage of keyboard shortcuts in place of using a mouse while in Cranium Cafe or Classrooms. While in the the online meeting spaces, one hundred percent navigation is possible using the tab key to chose various buttons and hitting enter or using our keyboard shortcuts

To activate and see the full range of keyboard shortcuts, you can either tab to the keyboard shortcuts button or hit the key combination of alt + shift + k, these shortcuts will allow you to navigate the meeting and make your interactions faster.

Also, while in Cranium Cafe or Classrooms, there is the ability to turn on Closed Captions to read what other users are audibly saying. To turn this option on, all you need to do is select the Enable Closed Captions button at the top left of the screen here, or through the settings panel here, which you can use the keyboard shortcut of alt + shift + S.

When enabling the Closed Captions option, you will need to allow up to sixty seconds for the program to begin running and analyzing what a user is audibly saying. For real-time Closed Captioning to work effectively and up to 95% accurate, the participants must speak into a dedicated microphone located within a headset or earbuds. Earbuds which come with all iPhones and Android devices work well since they have built-in microphones which produce effective captioning.  Without a dedicated microphone, the captioning will be negatively impacted by ambient and background noise.

Another option that is found in the settings button is the ability to toggle sounds to be played when someone types a message or enters your lobby. The options are to Play a Sound, Announce with text-to-speech, and Don’t Play a Sound. We recommend an audible notification that someone has joined your lobby for those that are not Deaf and hard of hearing.

Audio Notifications Setting:

  • Our default option, PLAYING A SOUND, simply makes a blaunk sound when someone enters your lobby just like this.

  • The ANNOUNCE WITH TEXT-TO-SPEECH option has the computer speak the name of the person who joined your Lobby  and it sounds like this.

  • The DON’T PLAY A SOUND option simply stays silent as someone enters your Lobby.

Another helpful feature of ConexED in the scheduler, and even while viewing a user’s ConexED card, is that without blinking or flashing, we clearly visually state what button or tab is selected by highlighting the selected button in an orange box. This distinct outline gives any viewer a clear indication of which button they have selected.

We’ve also made logging into ConexED as simple as possible. Entering through your school’s single sign on, or through our ConexED website, you can tab to and enter your username and password, choosing to remember the information if you want to, then clicking or tabbing to the login button.

Finally, we’ll examine the use of screen readers in conjunction with ConexED. When using any form of Screen Readers from VoiceOver for Mac to NVDA for Windows and even ChromeVox using the Chrome Internet Browser, our software is designed to function with any of these screen readers.
