Protecting Students: ADA & FERPA Compliant Video Enagement Software
State funded colleges and universities have been mobilizing towards online learning platforms to offer students online degree options. These schools have quickly realized that not only syllabuses and assignments should be accessible online, but student services also need to be a part of their online degree program. The big question is, do your student services departments use an approved ADA & FERPA compliant video engagement software? What types of technologies are acceptable for students with disabilities and protecting information within a real-time communication platform?
The Department of Education has posted “frequently asked qutestions” about secion 504 located here http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/504faq.html. We have added some guidelines that addresses video engagement software to help you identify if you are FERPA and ADA compliant.
1. Cranium Cafe is FERPA compliant, Skype is not.
Cranium Cafe is a platform built similarly to an learning management system. All information stored on your school’s Cranium Cafe instance is protected and secure. Integration into your school’s single sign-on authorization system allows student save access to face-to-face communication with their academic support teams. Skype is not secure and is separate from your school’s approved technologies. Using Skype is a federal offence and makes you vulnerable to legal circumstances.
2. Cranium Cafe has the highest level of ADA compliancy, Skype is not ADA compliant
Cranium Cafe’s goal is to democratize student support and allow all faculty, staff, and students the same access to real-time communication. Our video engagement platform has been vetted by top ADA compliancy officials in various colleges and universities. Skype is not ADA compliant and is not an accessibility approved software.
3. Cranium Cafe is specially built for education and student support, Skype is not
Cranium Cafe was built in Salt Lake City, UT out of Westminster College with a sole focus on faculty, staff, and student communication for all student services departments and initiatives. Cranium Cafe recreates the in-office experience with walk-in appointments, scheduling, and virtual lobby — just like on campus. Skype is a great tool for family and friend interaction — not student support services.
4. Cranium Cafe has an LMS style department level access panel, Skype does not
Cranium Cafe’s administration panel and backend allows schools to set departments and levels of access to each department segment. Each level of access allows faculty and staff data and analytical reports and resources to walk-ins, scheduled appointments, and real-time communication generated from their school’s
5. Cranium Cafe is cloud-based with nothing to download, Skype is not cloud-based
