A Shout Out To Dan, The Explanatory Video Man

This may be a bit unconventional, but hey, conventional is boring. I want to blog a shout-out.

Remember this video?

We love it. We loved it the first time we saw it and we love it today. We still smile when the little characters pop up just because we like them so much. But we also smile because we really like Dan.

We hired Dan Noakes of Motifize last year because we wanted an animated explanatory video for Cranium Cafe. To this day, we still talk about Dan’s work and what it was like to work with him.

In a private conversation (which he awkwardly allowed me to include in this post after my persistent-but-effective nudging/pushing), I asked him about his work and why he goes the extra 3.5ish miles. “I fall in love with my customer’s businesses,” he explained. “It’s weird, but I just get so excited about what they do.” I gave him my skeptical face, but it was short-lived as I started replaying our interactions in my head. Dan did fall in love with our business. When he had his light bulb moment and really understood how students can use our software, his enthusiasm was a complete trip. We both just amped each other up on escalating nerdy excitement.

After getting to know him a little bit, people quickly pick up on his passion for small businesses and for the work of entrepreneurs. But when taking a look at Dan’s work, it becomes obvious; he deeply cares and supports small businesses like ours.

After finishing our explanatory video, he graciously explained what a privilege it had been to work with us. But honestly, the privilege was ours. With solemnity but also a kind of nerdy enthusiasm, we give Dan a heartfelt shout-out.

I'm a higher ed geek and I can usually be found tweeting/blogging/chatting/pondering somewhere about it. Other things I think are awesome: Ender's Game, RadioLab, Game of Thrones, and I have a weird brain crush on the Canvas Network and their interdisciplinary MOOCs. It's just... SO COOL.
